a real fence would have been better

my garden is about 80% in. it looks good. gardening lends itself well to my obsessive need for order and patterns :) so, in the ground go all my happy little plants. i stand back and admire how nicely the beds came out. built them myself, thank you very much. 4 4×8 raised beds for now, more to come in the main part of the garden and elsewhere in the yard later. i think grass is overrated.

i’m digressing. back to the point (i know where i’m going with this, even if no one else does). the garden is in. the salad greens will be ready in a few days at most. i’m excited, especially so because i should have had these planted about a month ago. i spray something called “LIQUID FENCE” around the perimeter of the beds. it claims people aren’t supposed to be able to smell it, but that’s a load of crap. in fact what came out of the bottle smelled like a load of dog crap, mixed with something spicy. ick. it’s supposed to keep deer (we have no deer), rabbits (i think we might have rabbits, but i’ve never seen one) and chipminks (we have LOTS) away from the garden. i say good night to the plants–yes, out loud– and go back in the house.

next morning before work i walk outside with my coffee to visit the plants. they have been beheaded. in my half asleep state i looked around, confused and disturbed that someone would come into my yard and steal my broccoli plants. who on earth would do such a thing? i realize i’m not making sense. people might steal a head of broccoli, but not my seedlings. kneeling down i see they were not stolen but rather eaten right down to the ground. so are most of my sugar peas and all of the lettuce, kale, brussel sprouts and spinach. ACK! my poor plants! it would have been easier if i bought the plants, but i didn’t, i grew them. liquid fence my ass. i might as well have put a sign up saying, here’s my garden, please come destroy it! so…..do i start again in pots close to the house? go buy new plants? grow them again and resign myself to a very late season? on an up note, the tomatoes, peppers, shallots, onions and garlic were not bothered. maybe it’s all a sign i should cook more italian food.

i don’t see a difference yet

i feel like i should be spending less money, but i think i’m spending the same amount……just getting a lot more stuff.  so am i really helping anything by putting in all this coupon effort?  CVSing for nana was super fun for exactly one week, after which she didn’t seem interested.  i should start keeping track of what i gave her (in ECB’s) in order to make sure she spends it on something rather than let them expire…she tends to hoard things. maybe i’m being overly sensitive but she didn’t seem to give a crap.

i DO have a lot more stuff and i never feel guilty about buying things for myself, maybe that’s the payoff.  in the past, AKA pre-couponing days, there were definitely times i went without something i needed or especially something i wanted because i couldn’t afford it. that’s where the putting two or three things back right before checking out maneuver came from. it’s embarrassing to have to say “i get paid on friday, you have to wait” in response to “are we out of milk again?”.  it’s also frustrating when the questioner of the milk’s absence did not then go buy milk himself. it’s a slap in the face to ask me and then not buy it. you do get paid more than twice what i do, you know.

“i will make you say out loud that you can’t afford a measley $3.49 to buy milk, then i will suggest we go out to eat.  but i will not buy the milk.  i will never buy the milk because i know it makes you want to cry that you don’t have $3.49, and i want to make sure that spot in the fridge stays empty until friday when you get paid.”

hmph.

frugality unfolding

i’ve decided to try and never spend money again. well, that might be an exaggeration…..i’m at least making a concerted effort to drastically reduce the amount of money i spend on a regular basis. my husband thinks i’ve lost my mind and will no longer go on errands with me due to the *obscene* amount of coupons i use. i’ve seen people use far more!

anyway, the driving force behind all this: there are a few. first and foremost, i’ve been working very hard since we bought a house to get rid of all debt i had aquired pre-house and even pre-wedding. debt sticks to you, let me tell ya. i’m not going to get into actual numbers…suffice to say it was scary and i was embarassed by it. so there’s that aspect. also, food and gas costs keep rising! we need money to work on the house! we want to go on vacation! we’re trying to save up a pretty little nest egg! WHERE IS ALL THIS MONEY GOING TO COME FROM???

every dime saved is another dime to FIRST: pay off debt. SECOND: save, save, save. THIRD: treat ourselves once in a while! he hates to spend money and i think has some sort of genetic defect preventing him from putting money in a savings account. he won’t even give it to me to put in a savings account for him. hmph. that’s fine. i can make it happen.
